Esperanza is the loving wife of Miguel Rodriguez, mother to Ramón Rodriguez and grandmother to Michael and Olivia Rodriguez. She’s the backbone of the family, but is struggling with managing her diabetes. As the authority figure in the household, Esperanza makes the decision to develop a healthier lifestyle for her and her family.
Growing up in Mexico, Miguel became accustomed to traditional Mexican food and its rich culture. He and Esperanza met and fell in love in their native land, before moving to Selma, California, to raise a family. Though Miguel is set in his ways, Esperanza welcomes the challenge to persuade her husband to change his eating habits and exercise.
He has the title of manager at a Valley packing plant, but Esperanza’s only son is used to taking orders from his mom at home. He normally doesn’t challenge her decisions when it comes to the family, but when Esperanza has a diabetic episode during a trip to Mexico, Ramón takes charge.
To Claudia, family means everything. She is warm, soft-spoken, has a positive attitude and loves her receptionist job and her in-laws. She finds herself caught between her husband and mother-in-law as they battle over Esperanza’s health problems. Claudia is the peace-maker in the family and will do anything to bring peace to the family circle.
Like most 9-year-olds, Michael loves playing video games and eating junk food. He’s overweight for his height and age and isn’t interested in joining sports teams or doing anything else that requires physical activity. Esperanza will push the boundaries to persuade her grandson to eat more fruits and vegetables and to get moving!
Olivia is the baby of the family, which means she’s the center of attention and almost always gets her way. The 7-year-old is also easygoing and carefree. She loves her parents, but respects her grandparents. Olivia is the healthiest of the family members and is learning to adapt to Esperanza’s new healthy ways.
