Dr. Raul Ayala
Dr. Raul Ayala not only plays a role as a family medicine physician in the Esperanza telenovela series, but he’s also a doctor in real life. He’s been caring for patients at Adventist Health / Community Care – Selma for 1.5 years.
Dr. Ayala appears in Episodes 2 and 10 as Esperanza’s primary care physician. He encourages Esperanza to change her eating habits, exercise and consult a diabetes educator so she can join her family on their trip to Mexico for Christmas.
Maria Casanova, RN,
Certified Diabetes Educator
Maria Casanova is a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator for Adventist Health / Community Care in Hanford and Selma.
She appears in Episode 3, as a diabetes educator, who consults Esperanza on the importance of eating healthier foods, such as fruits and vegetables. She tells Esperanza to try replacing tortillas with spinach or lettuce.
Dr. Mario Martinez
Dr. Mario Martinez is a family medicine physician at Adventist Health / Community Care – Reedley Cypress.
He appears in Episode 8 and reveals to Esperanza’s daughter-in-law, Claudia, that she is bordering on gestational diabetes, which some women can develop in their 24th week of pregnancy. Dr. Martinez offers Claudia advice on how to keep her blood sugar levels low, so she and her baby remain healthy.
